3D Movie Ticket Prices Go Up This Week

In the grandest of American traditions, when something is hot and the demand is high, someone has to capitalize on this trend. Major U.S. movie theater chains have raised the prices for 3D movie tickets. With the popularity of “Avatar” and “Alice In Wonderland”, now seems to be the time to make more money from the immersive hungry escapist public.

Starting this weekend, major theater chains like Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings Inc. and AMC Entertainment Inc. will raise prices by as much as 26% of current 3D ticket prices.

I live in New York City. Movie ticket prices are ridiculous, and the thought of these prices going up more so makes me re-think going to the movies all together. The price for an IMAX 3D movie ticket at the AMC Loews in Lincoln Square on The Upper West Side, as of last week, was $16.50 and now is $19.50. Close to $20 to see a movie? It will cost a family of four to see “How To Train Your Dragon” this weekend $78. This is before the price of popcorn and soda. So we’re looking at spending nearly $100 for a day at the movies with your family. Is this worth it?

More and more 3D movies are coming out every year. With the announcement of Warner Bros increasing the number of films to be released in 3D from five in 2010 to nine in 2011, do you think 3D movie tickets will increase any further?

  • BOYCOTT THEM! 3D has been nothing more than Hollywood's attempt to fleece moviegoers out of more money, and everyone's falling for it! Stop allowing corporate power to drag you down to line their pockets!
