John Hurt Joins Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia

Famous provocateur and Danish auteur Lars von Trier has finally wrapped up collecting his cast for the upcoming ‘sc-fi-ish’ film, Melancholia, and today announced that the final spot will be filled by one hell of a brilliant thespian.

THR is reporting John Hurt has rounded out the cast for forthcoming film, which also features Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling and Charlotte Gainsbourg. There is little to nothing known about the film, other than that it is being called a ‘beautiful film about the end of the world,’ and that the film is going to be a sci-fi project.

With a rather tiny budget of $7.5 million, set to shoot in Sweden this July, I am overly excited to see just what the filmmaker has in store for us. Sci-fi is at its very best when the filmmakers are trying to make their film on a tiny budget, or at least at its most interesting, and with a great cast like this film has, I can’t help but have this film be my most anticipated film of next year. Von Trier, as much of a provocateur as he may be, he’s also one of today’s most gifted filmmakers, so give him a film, with a low budget, based on the end of the world, and you have the makings of a film that I’ll see opening day. Now it just remains to be seen if it will live up to the hype.

With Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist all but officially announced by Criterion, would you want a von Trier Sci Fi Film in the Criterion Collection?

Here’s to hoping.

  • i always look forward to new works from von trier. mainly because no matter what i read about the film beforehand or how much i may think the cast is a little wonky, the films themselves always turn out completely different than i would have originally expected. the cast of this film, minus dunst, sounds like it will be fantastic!
