A press release from Paramount and Warner Brothers Pictures announced today the start of principal photography on director Christopher Nolan’s new film, Interstellar. The film, based on an idea by Nolan from a script by his brother Jonathan Nolan, was previously attached to director Steven Spielberg before he passed on it and is based on the dimensional theories of physicist Kip Thorne. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain, as well as previous Nolan film alums Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine, the film “chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”

Personally, I think the most interesting detail to note from the press release is the fact that Nolan will again shoot the film in a combination of 35mm and IMAX that he utilized in the last two films of his Dark Knight Trilogy. Nolan has been perhaps the strongest proponent of shooting film instead of digital as well as being firmly anti-3D despite the fact that many of his peers have jumped ship in favor of these methods that many consider to be artistically inferior or mere cash-grabs. Also worth mentioning is this will be the first film since Nolan’s debut feature Following not to be shot by cinematographer Wally Pfister whose busy making his own debut feature, the similarly mysterious thinking man’s sci-fi tale Transcendence starring Johnny Depp. Instead, Nolan tapped Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Her DP Hoyte van Hoytema for the job.

Interstellar is slated to hit theaters on November 7, 2014.
