Last week, while on tour for the recent release of his novel The Fall (part 2 of his vampiric Strain Trilogy), Guillermo Del Toro took some time from his incredibly busy schedule to hang out with me. I had incredible access to one of my favorite filmmakers alive today, so I tried to use it wisely. I’d like to say that I didn’t geek out too badly with him, but that’d be a lie. We both geeked out for the entire time we hung out. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had so far with this blog, and I hope you enjoy the video clips I’ve included below.
We spent about a half hour talking about a variety of subjects, which I’ve recorded and cut up into each question and answer. I’m going to be releasing these over the course of a few posts, over the next week or so. Tonight I’m going to give you some of the stuff related to the Cronos Criterion Collection release that we’re getting this December 7th.
A couple notes before you check out the videos:
- This was my first video interview with a celebrity, so it’s painfully clear that I have no idea what I’m doing.
- The location was not ideal, as there is a lot of background noise that could not be helped.
So keeping those in mind, here are the first of my Guillermo Del Toro interview videos:
Some of the future posts will feature questions on The Strain Trilogy, The Mountains of Madness, as well as the Hobbit. So look for those soon!
Part 1: We talk about the Masters of Cinema commentary on Vampyr, and why it’s not on the Criterion version. Guillermo talks about a couple titles that he’d like to help curate for the Criterion Collection.
In case you didn’t catch what movie he was talking about first, he mentions L’arcano incantatore by Pupi Avati, here is the trailer:
He also mentions Lone Wolf and Cub: Final Conflict, by Akira Inoue
Part 2: We talk about the fabled “man cave,” better known as “Bleak House” which will be featured on the Criterion Collection DVD and Blu-ray, in the supplements.
Part 3: We talk about the short film, Geometria, from 1987, which will also be included on the Cronos Criterion Collection disc.
Great interview Ryan. I think you did a good job and it sounds like you both had fun.
Also for the record I am totally jealous.
Del Toro’s commentary for Vampyr could be released as a podcast! That is a good alternative to re-releasing the movie on DVD.
Or it could be sold separately as an audio-file on iTunes.
