Werner Herzog And Naomi Watts Teaming Up For Queen Of The Desert

With his latest film, Cave Of Forgotten Dreams, set to bow at the upcoming SXSW Film Festival, director Werner Herzog is looking to kick start his next project, in a huge way.

Vulture has revealed that the director is in ‘serious discussions’ with one Naomi Watts for a film entitled Queen of The Desert.   The film follows ‘Gertrude Bell, a real-life British woman who was alternately a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. While only a commoner herself, Bell was nonetheless a kingmaker, helping found the modern states of Iraq and Jordan and installing their first rulers, King Abdullah and King Faisal.’

The film is going to be an epic (according to an interview with The Playlist), and sounds like one hell of a film.   Herzog was born to helm a desert epic like this, and with Watts as his lead, it only sounds better.   It goes without saying that both involved are near the top of the heap of their respective craft, so the teaming up of the two should be nothing but rapturous.

What do you think?

  • Oooohhh exciting news. I have complete trust in Herzog and I think Naomi Watts is at her best when working for off the wall directors like Lynch, so these two should make a fine film.

  • Love it. My favorite actress. Herzog hasn’t really made a film for an actress in his career if i’m not mistaking. So should be a very interesting mix. The desert epic narrative of this real life legendary character has the makings of a great film.
