Wong Kar-Wai Cinematographer Christopher Doyle To Shoot First 3D Film, The Rabbit Horror

When you are Christopher Doyle, you’ve done your fair share of 2D cinematography.

Best known for his work with Wong Kar-Wai (In The Mood For Love) and his recent work with Neil Jordan (Ondine), along with other Criterion staples such as Gus Van Sant and Jim Jarmusch, it looks like Doyle is ready to take his work into the third dimension.

THR is reporting that Doyle is set to shoot his first 3D film, entitled The Rabbit Horror.   The film will be helmed by Takashi Shimizu, best known for helming The Grudge, and will star Hikari Mitsushima and Teruyuki Kagawa. It will follow ‘a boy’s crumbling family,’ along with ‘his dangerous relationship with a stuffed toy animal that comes to life.’

Now, while this premise doesn’t sound at all compelling, the idea of Doyle shooting a 3D feature makes this a film I’m massively excited for.   He’s one of today’s most gifted cinematographers, and if he is able to bring that same style to 3D, we may be in for something truly wonderful.

What do you think?

  • Hmmm…..isn’t 3D a bit too gimmicky for someone like Doyle? When I hear 3D I immediately expect a children’s CG-animated film or a soul-less action flick which uses the technology – and not so well mind you – as a crutch to compensate for the lack of substance a la Clash of the Titans.

  • Oh, and by the way……….WHERE IS THE “IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE” BLU-RAY?!!!!!!! If there is any film which deserves an HD remastering it’s this one. C’MON CRITERION…HOW ABOUT A 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY RELEASE!!!!

    *yes….I’m using caps because i’m yelling ;) *
